Strange happenings on importing gedcom to GR

Last night I updated my tree on GR by importing a gedcom from my offline tree (Legacy). It has done very strange things to it. According to my new GR tree, my husband's g-g-g-g aunt (who I have yet to find a marriage for) was married to my g-g grandfather's second wife! Heaven knows what else there is - I don't think I can bear to look! Has anyone else developed some weird family relationships when importing their gedcom? Tina

Fortunately my master Database is in FTM and I never export from GR. GR's made a total pig's ear of the import though :o( Linda

Well, I have imported a gedcom lots of times before with no ill-effects. Fortunately, it does not matter in that my definitive tree is held off-line. I just update the one on GR periodically when I have sufficient new information added, in the hopes of making fresh contacts. So in that sense it does not matter - I have not done any harm to my information. But it does of course affect the likelihood of making more contacts through GR - which is what I pay my annual sub for. Wonder if it is worth emailing GR - not sure it's worth the bother, since they obviously have not addressed other people's problems. Tina

Hi Tina or should I say meow, I too have noticed strange 'marriages' between totally random individuals on my genesreunited tree. I use Family Historian to compile my gedcom; the gedcom is good prior to importing onto the genes website but after uploading my tree there are lots of corruptions. It was only pointed out to me last week when one of my contacts querried a relationship... I compared my Family Historian file to the genesreunited tree and there was no resemblance! Whatever has gone wrong during the import gedcom routine it seems to have happened over recent months. Let us know how you get on. Dez Watson b.1970

Although the website says it is not necessary to delete your tree prior to importing a gedcom, it might be prudent to perform a delete your genes tree. I have noticed less coruptions after importing if I delete the whole tree beforehand. Bit more tedious as you have to wait until the delete has taken place before you import your ged. Originally the site said you had to delete before an import - for me it seems to work better usign this method still. Dez
