I wonder if any of you would be able to cast your eye for me. I have my ggg grandfather Augustus Richard Snewin born 23 July 1857 Shoreditch London. Tracked him all the way up to being the informant on the death cert of his wife Alice on the 26 Nov 1911, but can't find his death. Have trawled BMD on ancestry right up to Dec 1950 but cant see him living to 93!!. There is a death Jan 1910 but this is his son with same name. Any help or suggestions would be very greatfully received going slightly mad here! Thank You |

I've checked the deaths from March qtr. of 1951 to Dec. qtr. of 1955 and I can't find him, so you must have missed him. Have you checked any qtrs. that are missing from Ancestry on 1837online? Could he have gone abroad? I have been looking for the death of my grandfather between 1950 and 1980ish for 3 years now and I can't find him either. Kath. x |

So he was def alive at wifes death - couldnt have been the son of same name as informant - he was the death a year before mum? Well, Im in same boat too (no pun) with a mariner who just doesnt appear anywhere. I thought perhaps he died at sea, but Ive been trawling sea death registrations this morning and he isnt there either. I wonder if they have recorded it under a mispelt name. |

I don't know if you have seen my 'unknown' thread on the tips board. At the very end of some death ( and birth) quarters after the Z entries, there are lists of unknowns. I presume these are people who for one reason or another are never identified. On some quarters there seems to be quite a number of them. They have to 'belong' to someone's tree. I don't know how you could ever prove if it was the person you are missing but it gives an idea of the number of people who will be missing under their own name. Helen |

your right Andrew, I don't. My Dad doesn't remember the death and he was born in 1934. I will look though, thanks just seemed unlikely. |

Helen, Thanks for telling us about the 'unknown' entries. I have just been having a look and it's the first time I have seen these, and I've been searching the indexes for my grandfather's death for 3 years. As you say, it would be almost impossible to prove any of these were someone you were looking for, but at least it explains why we might not be able to find entries which should be in the indexes.
