I recived a Will this morning. It gave the name of a son born to a spinster aunt. I have found his birth. Charles. F. E. Moden Oct/Nov/Dec 1924 Could some one look and tell me what the small a means at the end of the page number as no other's have this. Thanks Diane

It's part of the page number, I've seen this before. Maybe it was added on to the page later and they needed to put this to fit it in. nell

I have seen a couple of those 'a' entries where it appears that the birth was re-registered afterwards with a different name, although I haven't got the actual certificates. In one case the first name was different, in another the spelling of the surname had been corrected. Perhaps something similar in this case? Anyway, it must mean that they had to put a page in afterwards and had already used the next page number. Kate.

How would i find out if the name was reregistered in a diffrent name any one know please. Diane.

If i send for this certificate will it tell me of a name change. Any one konw please. Diane

I once sent for two certs (something like 124a & 125) and ended up with two copies of the same cert - I sent one back and was refunded in full. I am going to send for the certificate as i need it , i have a feeling that a name will be droped from it as it stands now it is Charles Francis Elligett Moden. The name of Elligett was his Grandmothers Maiden name and his mothers Middle name I have a feeling this name will be droped. Daine.

So are you saying that if I look for the same person a little before the one I have on BMD I should see some thing similar. Diane

My guess is that his original birth registration could have been with a different surname, perhaps a mis-spelling, perhaps the father's surname? And I think it would be in the same quarter, otherwise I don't think it would be one of those 'a' entries. There are only 3 entries in that quarter for the surname Moden, and neither of the other ones could be the original registration for yours, so unless you have a good idea what the original surname might have been, I don't think you would be able to find the original registration by searching the indexes. But I am pretty sure that the birth certificate that you would get by ordering with the details you have will tell you what the original name was. Kate.
