I have the date for my ggggrandfather's marriage:- Reuben Gasson b 1814 m1847 - apr/may/june. His wife's name was Sarah. I habe a print of the page in the register - how do I find our more from the info on the page. ie Gasson Reuben Hailsham v11 547 I would love to know what Sarah's maiden name was & what their parents were called. Any tips gratefully received

You will have to pay £7 and send off for the certificate. This will give you Sarah's maiden name, the names and occupations of both fathers and also their ages. You should hopefully then find them on the 1841 census. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp Sam x

Have just had a quick check on FreeBMD and looked at the page. There is a Sarah Cornwell and a Sarah Cummins on the same page so it could be either of those two - however, the Sarah Cummins one is Whitchurch, not Hailsham. Hope that helps.

They are in the 1851 census with their son James 2 living at Heathfield. I wonder if he married again in 1867 as there is a Reuben Gasson and Ruth Beeney 13.04.1867 at Ewhurst. Sussex on IGI father of Reuben is James Gasson. Irene

I just found that entry on the 1851 census aswell. However, the wife's year of birth is complete and utter twaddle as they have it as abt 1851!! Basically, you can't read it from the original sheet. They have Reuben born abt 1814 in Chiddingly, her born in Warbleton abt 1851 and the son, James born in Heathfield, Sussex abt 1849.

James Gasson is on FreeBMD for Dec 1848 born Hailsham and Warbleton is part of that district. His birth certificate would give you his mother maiden name. Good Luck Irene

Thank you so much - I can't believe how quickly I have found help. I did have the 1851 census but couldn't work out sarah's DOB or where she was from. Thanks for the help. Shân

There is a Sarah Gasson that died at Hailsham Sept. 1851 so perhaps Reuben did marry again in 1867. Irene

I feel useless - everyone else is sooo good at this. If sarah did die in 1851 can I obtain her death cert to find our who she was married to & the same again for Reuben's second marriage. I rather admire Reuben as if he did marry again he would have been 49 - perhaps he had a second family - this is very exciting!! Thanks again , Shân
