The Irish certificate is more like the English one, but on the address of the person born and the informant, mine have given the townland (the section of the parish) rather than an actual address. teresa

Teresa What was the information on the certificate from NI, an English one or (hopefully) like the scottish ones? Carrie

Hi Mhairi GRONI say they will reject applications from outside Northern Ireland. Found this for Southern Ireland (From GOOGLE search) www.groireland.ie/faqs How do I apply for a Birth/Death/Marriage Certificate or photocopy from the General Register Office? You can apply in writing, by fax or in person giving as many details of the birth, death or marriage as you can, i.e. full names, date and location of event, parent's names and occupations, mother's maiden names etc. Obviously the more information you can give us the more chance we have of finding the records you are looking for. Our index and records are date based and are in a manual format so we will need accurate dates (correct year at least). The absolute minimum information we need is the forename and surname (of both parties if it's a marriage) and the year the event occurred and in many cases we will need some further detail/s such as an exact date, the location of the event, other forenames, parents names etc. Have a look on the site, mine are from Northern Ireland (and most bits I've got from the online County Antrim database) so I've got no experience of tracing in Southern Ireland. Teresa Do you think they would still do a search if you didnt know what area the person was born in? I have a fathers name, possible occupation, mothers first name, approx year of birth but i have no idea where he was born (ie Ireland on the census doesnt help). Thanks Mhairi

The only way to do a look up yourself is to pop over to the GRO in Ireland and go through the books. I'm in the same position with my greatgrandfather, I have his name and an approximate DoB but I have no idea who his mum was, and his children never met his family so they can't help.

INDEX information see next post. NORTHERN IRELAND BIRTH certificates for this period can be ordered on-line from GRONI, don't be intimidated by having to fill in Mother/fathers name, address put UNKNOWN. The important bit is name, year, and town which I think is the registration district town from the INDEX , they'll search I think a couple of years either side of date given. I've sent for one with most boxes filled in UNKNOWN, they replied after 6 working days giving me the information and asking if I wanted the certificate if relevant! and giving me the option of a half charge refund. Mind you it took them another TWO weeks to send it!! People have ordered from SOUTHERN IRELAND, look at previous threads to find out how succesful they've been.

Is there such a thing available anywhere as Irish BMD indexes?I need to get a couple of certificates but you seem to need all the information eg parents names etc before they can give you one.If I had all information then I wouldn't need a certificate!Any information will be grateflly received, Wendy
