Some of you know (are bored to tears with) my over 2 year search for the marriage/births of Edward Horstead and Elizabeth Selby (b1735 and 1741 respectively). I just got a match - dates slightly out but really excited - contacted him and he sends me all this info - ALL taken from MY family home page - how sickening!

Heather I know EXACTLY how you feel because the very same thing happened to me a couple of days ago! I had exchanged info with several people - great, that's what it's all about. However, I only take info on direct ancestors/descendants, whereas this person had taken my whole tree, lock, stock and barrel. I still have no complaints about that at all, because I had given him permission. But it was SOOOO disappointing when I found my elusive Irish great-grandfather's name on here, wrote off a very excited message, only to find that it was the information that he'd got from me in the first place (g/grandfather is my maternal side, this man is on my paternal side). Chin up and keep fingers crossed for a 'real' hot match next time! Love Mandy x

Heather, How did he get copy of your home page. Do you mean the list on this site. If so what a wast of time, no fun in that. Best part of this is the challenge. Diane

No, I have a family home page on the web - this guy had taken the info from there. I wrote really excited that someone else had this couple and he sent back a note, I dont know any more, I found this on a brilliant site - here is the addy (my rotten site). So no go there. Im still waiting to hear just what connection he has to my family!

ON TOP of that, Ive just queried his connection and he gives me a marriage which would make the daughter of my GGFx2 aged 1 when she married!!! Ive just done a rudimentary search and the woman he is looking for was born 120 miles away and 30 years earlier. I do hope he takes my stuff off his tree now.

Heather Dont talk to ME about disappointing Hot Matches! I am still recovering from a positive match on 13 rellies. Turned out these have been plucked off One World Tree, because the names are the same...but no birth, marriage or death dates for any of the seven generations in between! Olde Crone

Olde Crone, I wrote to this guy, supplying him with reference for his great grandads marriage to a Sarah Horstead who was NOT of my line. Supplied him with census details, with death details of his lot. I get back a note, yes, I know how to do these things but I am trying to do it at zero cost to me. I dont want to spend £7 out on possibles, nor any money on ancestry. I was fuming. He had added my tree onto his back to 1735 just because he had gone through the IGI instead of spending £7 to buy a marriage certificate!

Heather Yep, I had one like that! No match that I could see and questioning revealed that he was just trawling in the hope of hitting on the right family. He said he was DEEEESPERATE and emailed me several times for help. But not desperate enough to buy a marriage cert for 7.00, which would have opened the gate in his flimsy 'brickwall'. Olde Crone

I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll cough up £7 to knock down a pathetic little whimper of a wall! Merry
