I think their names were William Kelly=Rebecca Lyon(s) born 1765 and 1769 WATERFORD. Haven't a clue which site to try. Believe they landed up in Bristol. Would be grateful for any help. Thank you. JM |

Type 'irish' in the search box and you will see a list of threads asking for and answering Irish related topics. Also try genuki, but if memory serves me right, irish rellies can be a bit of an awkward area. Glen |

1765 is about the limit for most Irish Ancestors, unless you have Protestant Ancestors whose records might have survived back to the 1600's. You will really need to visit Ireland and research Dublin Library for Parish Records but you will need to know the Townland. You could try Griffiths and Tithe Aplotment for Waterford. Griffiths is 1848 to the mid 1860's and Tithe Aplotments are a little earlier about 1840+. Try googling Waterford to see when their records start. You can also google Griffiths and Tithe Aplotment to see if any of your family are in these census subsitutes. These are head of household only. One website for Waterford is: http://www(.)irish-roots(.)net/waterford(.)asp County Waterford borders County Tipperary which records go back to 1796. Carrick on Suir(Tip) also borders County Waterford and County Kilkenny and some of those records go back to the 1700's, just. You can sometimes pull in Irish Parish Records through an LDS Centre, at a small cost but you will need to know the Townlands you want. Knowing the County only is NOT enough. You can try IGI but many are missing so that will be pot luck. Janet |

irish records aren't as easy to get hold of as those for Scotland, England and Wales. They are done by county and held at county centres (especi\lly if parish records) and only the appointed person based there can look them up for you unless you go to the state records in Dublin yourself and even that is restricted and coulx take a very long time. (You'll find the relevant emails on iriah Ancestry by the relevant county). The key is to have a reasonable idea who you're looking for, dates and place of birth death. If like me you don't have this it can take forever and gets expensive if you ask the county centre to do. I have had a moan about it and the rationale is that the churches didn't want lots of people handling the records. Fine but now they are all computerised can't see what the issue is! I think maybe they bare just not as far ahead as the rest of the UK. The guy at Monaghan is actually very good and has done some stuff for me but get your cheque book out! geneaolgy isn't a freebie as I'm sure you'll know but having someone else do the searching does rather take away some of the sense of achievement. To access Irish Records you will need to understand what the following Irish Terms mean: Barony google Townland googgle Parish both Catholic and Protestant google and you will need your maps for both Please also note that the State Records did not start until 1864 and you will have NO trouble in Dublin/Roscommon researching these through the GRO's in both these places. The Irish pre 1864 were not too hot on recording deaths and deaths are notorioosly difficult to find pre 1864. Jill, You are talking about Parish Records which is a very different issue. As I have said earlier these did not usually start in Ireland until around 1780's due to the fact that as Ireland was a Catholic Country and Catholic Emancipation was not around until 1829 which meant that Catholics in the UK, and that meant Ireland as well, were unable to practice their faith legally or have children bap in a Catholic church or marriages take place in catholic churches. However, there was much leniency on these issues from about 1760 onwards so you will find some areas where baps and marriages took place earlier than 1829. You can pay the County Heritage Centres to do this parish work for you which I think is what Ann may be alluding to, but you do NOT need to pay anyone to do this parish work provided you are willing to travel to Dublin or you have a local LDS centre where they will pull many of the parish records in for you at a small cost. The only BUT here is that you ned to know which Townland to ask for. I am NOT talking IGI in this instance. In the early 1900's the LDS cchurch completed a pretty full survey of all the parishes in Ireland and all their completed work is in Salt Lake City. But it will not be enough to know your folk came from Waterford. As I have said previously the National Library of Dublin holds all the Parish Records for the whole country. You can google the National Library Dublin to find out what their holdings are. I have used the National Library for years and been very successful. Two exceptions are: 1 County Tipperary which is a closed County so you will either have to go through the Tipperary Heritage Centre at a cost of between £50 and £250 or find other ways. This is definitely an area where you will need to know the exact church you are looking for if you go it alone. 2 County Kerry which County needs the Bishops Permission but which only needs a letter. I had no trouble obtaining my letter of permission, which you then present to the National Library. There is a lot of fuss and wrong information circulating atround concerning Irish reserarch. Please do all learn to google to collect your FACTS not the fiction that I see so often on this site. Googling has brought me so much info on line for even Irish History and there are many fragments on line if you look for them. Cork County has some excellent material and I am sure other counties have as well. You just need to use a bit more initiative with Irish Family History. Janet |

Apologies for not getting back sooner - been busy but very many thanks to all who replied. I'll print them out for reference. Oh and Joy - that info came from my father donkeys years ago. He was right about the generation 1828 which I have confirmed and I thought these two must be their parents but obviously they couldn't have been. I can't find anything giving me the parents names when I put in the 1828 lot so am scuppered. Now I've got some ideas I can go through them - with my fingers crossed! Thanks again all of you. Jill |

Well I have found out that William Kelly and Rebecca Lyon, correct dates of birth by the way, were married in 1790 so that's something. Now I need to know the names of their children in the missing generation so back to all your suggestions. Thanks. |
