I've just had a birth cert today and the fathers' occupation is a 'waterman'. I did try to google it but every known waterman character appears but nothing as an occupation. Any ideas? Glen |

In 1891 the house stood close to the old Roman Canal, the railways and a boatyard. About a mile away stood the corporation water department buildings/urban water buildings. Struggling a bit here,in 1885 the occupation is waterman,in 91 and subsequent certs he's a labourer. Glen |

Oops, thought you were someone else! Where was your guy a waterman? On the Thames watermen were licensed to convey people/some light goods across the Thames or along. If it was in London, please give me his name and date of birth. |

Hi all, Looks like my canal link, posted to make it easier to read could bear fruit then. Heather, this is in Lincoln c1888,200/300 yards from the Fossdyke Canal, and close to the infamous 'Glory Hole'. The marina (now the Brayford Pool) was the site of the old roman wharf. Strange thing is both sides of the family have watery connections, waterman on one side and mariner/master mariner/coastgaurd on the other. Thanks for the replies. Glen |
