Can’t find a Mc Person – and no, that is not a Big Mac - consider the following: I was trawling through the inmate list of the Bethnal Green Workhouse 1881 census when I noticed that several inmates named McCarthy were listed under the ‘C’ category i.e. John MC CARTHY and not under McCarthy. It might be a point worth remembering as it might have been more of a common practice that we think. Rita |
