Does anyone have any info regarding the availability of railway employees' records in the 1800s in England? Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Sue, You could try the National Archives website, they hold a lot of railway records there at Kew. I got a book from the library, called ' Was your grandfather a railway man?' by Tom Richards. This tells you the type of records that are available and also gives references to the various rail companies, that you can use to track the details you want at the National Archives. If you find what you want, you can then order copies. Hope thatt has helped and good luck Lynn Lyons

Sue If you type 'railway' in the thread search there are many Q's and A's about the railways, with links to different sites. I did visit some just out of curiousity and found some had photographs complete with complete and incomplete names of the people and places in the pictures. Sorry i can't actually remember the site addys,it was a while ago now. Glen

Hi Sue, You must have read my mind, I was going to ask this tonight. I know my Great uncle worked on the railways ( and was killed falling off a train) but there is also family gossip he was a Royal Train Driver when it came up North, so National Archives here I go. Another Sue

Sue, You may be interested to know that Family Tree Magazine feature article March 2006 was 'Ancestors on the Railway'. April 2006 features part 2 of this feature. You should still be able to get copies of both mags at W.H. Smiths. Ray Whincup
