2) All adoption records are sealed and can only be accessed by the adoptee. The adoptee has to apply to social services for their records and usually have to under go counsalling before they can be given their files. 1) I've never had 2 maiden names but I have seen them. I would guess that the person had 2 former names. for example a widow would have a maiden name and a married name. both should be recorded on the certificate so if there was question as to which name was the maiden name both may have been indexed.

Helen I had a marriage reference which gave the surname of the bride as 'xxxx or xxxx'. It was because the lady in question's mother had married someone (not her father) after she was born. She took his name (although not legally) and therefore gave both surnames when she got married.

Hi, I think this can also be the case if the person is not married but the father goes along with his partner and the child is registered under both name, I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. What do you want to know about adoption? Sheila

Here are some dates, from 1837online: Marriages: March quarter 1912 to September quarter 1962 -- if female was previously married, index shows maiden name and married name Merry
