HI i am trying to trace an elizabeth carter. i have found her on all the cenus etc. but when she registered the birth to her son in 1898 at the union infirmary fulham she gave her address as 50 latimer road hammersnith. no fathers name she was born in 1880 in aldbourne wiltshire and was on the 1881 census and the 1891 census living in upper upham in hampshire. somewhere along the line she obviously became pregnant and ended up in fulham . she gave birth when she was 18 to her son harry as stated above. i have tried on the 1901 census to find out something about that address and there are 3 sister living there. they are no relation to elizabeth and it says they are 'living for means and parish cook ' elizabeth had moved away by then and had married a man alot older than herself. how can i find out who lived at 50 latimer road hammersmith around 1898 ? anyone got any ideas ? and what does 'living for means ' mean ? soryy this message might seem a bit garbled love linda x

Could it be 'living on own means' which means basically they had enough money to support themselves? Investments, income, whatever. As for how you could find out who was living there, you could try the Historical Directories website at www.historicaldirectories.org Also you could try looking it up on the electoral roll for that year, but you won't be likely to find the names of any women, only of anybody who actually had the vote, could be nobody listed at that address. (You would have to go to the record office which has the electoral roll as it would not be available online.) I'll have a quick look on historical directories myself as I know my way around it quite well! Kate.

living on 'own' means maybe? had income that they didnt have to work for usually ( say rent from a propety or pension type income) Sorry kate answered at the same time

thank you both for that. i thought thats what it might mean but not sure. elizabeth was on her sons birth cert as a generel domestic servant at that address. as that was 1898 i wonder if the same three sister who where on the 1901 census (all in their 50's) lived there when she was there? thanks for your help linda x

Just had a look at the 1899 London street directory on Historical Directories website and the only Latimer Road in there says it is in Notting Hill, which is a little bit north of Hammersmith, so I'm not sure if it is the same one or not. But anyway, nobody is listed at number 50 so it's not much help! Kate.

Well, all I can suggest is try the electoral roll but as I said, it won't give you a complete list of occupants. But anyway, she may not have been living at the same address as her child's father. Kate

hi kate, thanks for all your hard work, i dont think she lived with the father of her baby. she left the countryside and went to london. who knows she might have already been pregnant? what a shame only 18 living away from home giving birth in the workhouse and marrying a man nearly 30 years older than herself and then moving back to the country. i was just trying to put together some picture of what her life would have been like. thanks again. i will perhaps put a post on the records site to see if anybody has info on that area thanks linda x x
