Sittingbourne and the areas nearby are well known for producing house bricks,in the area there are big pits which the clay was dug from, many now stand a hundred or more feet deep, and are full of strange coloured water,(local minerals leaching into it) The area employed many people to feed the expansion of London due to the railways, and for the buildings for the railways themselves. Of course much of the manual work done by hand. |
