hi, i am trying to trace the family of my granddad, i am at a brick wall with him and i havn't even started yet!!!! i've done great on my nan's side, but grandad is a problem!!!!!!! i've been to the local library and looked at the births, marriages, and deaths of the area, with no luck! i have the marriage cert. i am beginning to wonder if he was ever registered, he was born 1897 in [ which i thought was right ] new ferry area on the wirral, but can't find him any where!! he's not even on the 1901 census for that area! was it compulsery to register a birth in 1897? was it compulsery to have them christened? it's like looking for a needle in a haystack!!!! if any one cares to look for him his name was Edward Glover, born January 1897 so in 1901 he would be 4 years old,i don't know if he had any other christian name, his father was George, don't now the mothers name. chris. |

Is the year of birth a known fact or a calculation based on the age at time of marriage. |

If the occupation was bargeman it could be connected to the canals, but maybe to do with the larger boats. On census night the enumerator should have walked the waterway and checked each craft, but it didn't always happen. Births to families on the water could easily have occured whilst docked but often happened whilst on a trip, the problem then is where and if the birth would be registered. Bearing in mind that it took many hours to travel even a short distance on the boats and registration may not have been immediate, the birth could be many miles from where you believe it to be. Lots of my ex partners rellies where from the canals, and many children lived 'on the bank' in the very early years of life. By 1900 the canal system (assuming we are talking canals) was pretty much complete and the distances goods and people travelled increased. Try googling canals, many canal folk from the NW would trave South l to Stoke or Birmingham and North to Lancaster and beyond. The mills of Lancashire and Yorkshire all passed goods on the waterways, carried along by dare i say 'water gypsies'. The British Waterways site is quite useful and has links to many other 'local' sites that may give some useful information. Glen |
