Bet you didn't know that Chipping Ongar was in France in 1851. I thought the east coast was supposed to be eroding! |

Thank you so much. I'm having trouble finding the family in 1881 so this unusual name might help. Liz x |

Oh! West Ham uniopn school. That was attached to the workhouse which became Langthorne Hospital, Langthorne Road, Leytonstone/Leyton borders. One of my great gran's was born near there and my grandmother died there. Look here for more info; http://www.wfcs.org.uk/Langthorne_fork.htm |

Hi Glitter & Janet, Thanks for that. I have found the 1881 entry, and another sister also at the same institution. No sign of either parent, but a probable death for Dad in 1874. Looks like the family was broken up following the death of Dad - Mum may have died or remarried. Its only a side twig so I am not too concerned with finding them all, but I do feel a bit sad for them. Liz x |

I found an ancestor in an institution 'Home for Friendless Girls' (sound sad just from the name!) in 1861 aged 15. Mum died when she was four, dad married mums sister (naughty, it wasn't legal then), step-mum died when she was eight and dad married again when she was ten. Poor kid. Dad had obviously 'moved on' to quote Tony Blair. |
