I know this is a really stupid question but are all BMD's of British Subjects overseas recorded or does it only apply to the forces? If they all should be when did this come in to force? I don't want an unnecessary trip to the FRC |

I am pretty sure that you won't find all BMD's of British subjects overseas in the overseas indexes, nor even all forces ones. (But presumably they would be recorded in whatever registers there are in the country where the B, M or D took place.) Have you already tried the overseas indexes on 1837 online? I'm not sure if there are others at the Family Records Centre which aren't on there, though somebody else might know. Kate. |

I haven't tried 1837. I have never been able to get their viewer to work on my 'puter and as the span of time I need to check could be anything up to fifty years, I think a trip to FRC would be less costly. Strill, rest of the week off work so............... Thanks for the reply. |

I found one in the Consular births for overseas index at St Catherine's House. That was indexed in1856 as born in Christianaland. His parents were nothing to do with the forces - the father was a ship's carpenter. Jay |

Just in case you get the viewer working..........the overseas BMD's on 1837online are not in Q's like the normal ones....... Yesterday I searched for a death over 20 years.......I knew it wouldn't be a maring death, but checked all the consular deaths and the army ones.....some of the pages have 30 or 40 years covered on one sheet of paper!! I think it cost me 80 or 90p for the 20 year spread (not that I found the entry, you understand!!!) Merry |

I'm pretty good at geography, but I can't for the life of me work out where 'Christianaland' is! It sounds slightly Scandinavian, somehow...? |

I am SO sorry I didn't get back last night. Needy partner decided He was more important than me finding dead rellies. How selfish is that! Thanks for the replies. I think I may contact the local archives and see if they have the overseas on fiche. |

Andrew, Christianaland is Norway, which is what it said in census. Jay |
