I am trying to find the death details for my g grandfather ,however age old problem.....his name is Smith. I have no idea when he died. His last child was born in 1922 so it's anytime from then onwards. Last I knew he was living in London in 1901 census so area is no help as they could've moved anywhere after that. I am guessing the only way ahead is just to trawl through decades of George Smiths? Does anyone have any tips for me on how I may be able to narrow it down a bit as I am somewhat daunted!!!!!! update at half two.....will be off boards for about an hour. Sorry didn't realise the time!! |

I don't suppose any of his children are still alive to help you? Or is there anybody in your family who might know? Because it could be pretty difficult to pick him out from all the George Smiths otherwise (unless he had an unusual middle name?) Kate. |

Marie If you have him on the 1901 census....look along to see the 'place of birth' NOT where he was living at time of census. It's at the end of the line. Hope this helps. Gerrix. |

Thanks Kate and Gerri There is no one alive that can give me the info unfortunately. Wish I had started doing this sooner!!!! He was born in Castle Bytham Lincs and was living in London so no go there either. Oh dear!!!! Is there anyway of finding out where he was living by maybe electoral role or anything like that? |

If you got the birth cert for the last child you would have an address. As long as he stayed at that address he would be on the electoral roll for it, but as soon as he moved, you would be lost again....unless the reason for him vanishing from the roll was because he died. Is it possible to source and of his children's marriage certs?? if he was listed as dec'd on any of those, you might then have an end date for your search. Merry |

Thank you Merry. I hadn't thought of the marriage certs of his children. How silly of me!!! Have his marriage and birth cert and his wifes and am due to send for another batch of certs and needed one more so I will do that today. My grandad was married in 1942 ish so like you say if he is deceased it will at least narrow me down a bit. Really appreciate your help all of you. Many thanks again. |

Marie, you say your grandad was alive in the early 1900's well if you check for deaths from that date onwards on Ancestry, the deaths then show the age of the person from there you can work out if this was your grandad, as you know when he was born, if the age doesn't match up then disregard that one, good luck. Hi Bev Thanks for your reply. I kind of started to do that and after going through only three years I had seventeen possible George Smiths age wise!!!!! Needle in a haystack springs to mind. However, with a name like Smith I knew it wouldn't be easy. Thanks again Marie |
