Is there any way I might trace where and when my great grandmother, Catherine or Cathrine Farren or Farran left Ireland and where she was in the gap years before her marriage? Known address, aged about 8, in County Dublin at 1851 census. Next known of in a photograph taken in Richmond on Thames, Surrey ... judging by clothes, probably early 1860s. Next definite date, marriage certificate in Kensington, Middlesex [i.e. London] May 1868. I have not found her in England on the 1861 census, but may have missed her. I think it possible, however, that she left Ireland, probably from Dublin as they lived only 4 miles from the city, after the 1861 census. I live within reach of London, so can visit FRC and other archives fairly easily. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Rosemary

You are only likely to find her on either BMDs or on census records. Ireland was part of Great Britain at that time and movement between Ireland and the mainland was free and undocumented (free not meaning free of charge but free of let or hindrance) :-) Keith
