I have a marrage certificate for my Gt Aunt.Mary She married her 2nd husband in Cambridge 1927. He was Edward I Cooper aged 57 on the cert. it says The Deviorced Husband of Annie Cooper (formerly Ogdon spinster) It says rank or profession Rider Master. Father Robert Cooper (Deceased) Riding master I found the marrage between Annie and him in march 1896 Bolton Lancashire. I have looked for the last day or two for him on census. found thease two that seems to match, age and Father, but at no time is there any mention of Riding master. also why was in Cambridge 1927 at the time of the marrage living at number 12 kings street Mary was living at number 14 kings street. The 1901 census is surely right, because this is Annie Ogden before she married, on the 1881 census with matching age and place of birth: >>>>>Annie Ogden abt 1871 Otley, Yorkshire, England Daughter 7 Nippet Pl, Leeds, Yorkshire, England Elizabeth Ogden abt 1848 Elland, Yorkshire, England Wife 7 Nippet Pl, Leeds, Yorkshire, England Harry L. Ogden abt 1875 Otley, Yorkshire, England Son 7 Nippet Pl, Leeds, Yorkshire, England Jonathan T. I expect the occupation ''riding master'' would be a job in the army, so yes, they look like very good fits to me! Merry |

Riding master would be an army job.....think of all those cavalry soldiers who would need training! Maybe if Robert was a career soldier, then they might have been out of the country?? Merry |

I think Riding Master would be a job in the army (probably the cavalry). The Boer War was going on in 1901. Kath. x |

Cooper is unfortunately a fairly common name, but it ought to be the case that discharge papers, at least for Robert, survive in the National Archives at Kew. These should show exactly where he served and contain all sorts of personal details. |
