I was wondering if in the olden days....... mid 1800's could there have been a snobbery value between the two places as my dear departeds changed their birth place from Chartham to Chatham?? thanks for any thoughts

Id have thought Chartham was the posher place, Chatham has always been a port town.

Hi, I live in Kent. Chatham is one of the medway towns in Kent. Chartham is a village just outside Canterbury. They are about forty miles apart.

that might be best. I see on your other thread you are looking for someone in Chillham which is only four miles from Chartham

Chartham is where, in those non-PC days, the area's lunatic asylum was, so perhaps they didn't like the association. Even when I was small (don't ask) you were threatened with 'being sent to Chartham'.
