Births are recorded on the GRO index in quarters March, June September and December. March quarter means all those born Jan - March and so on. Gwynne |

Parents have six weeks after a birth in which to register it, so if you were born after mid February you might be registered in the Apr-Jun quarter. If born after mid May you might be registered in July-Sep Q and so on........ Merry |

I have found my birth with my surname spelt wrong. It was a common mistake in the past I know, but I am not THAT old, and can`t understand how it can have been mistranscribed. Frances |

KC The BMD index lists when the event was registered and not the accul event. If you add on 6 weeks to your birthday do you get the same as what the index says? e.g. Born 1st Jan, registered Feb Born 21st Jan, registered Mar Before 1984 all births were listed in quaters so anyone born mid to end of a quarter could be registered in the following quarter. I found my cousin registered 6 years after her birth, I then kicked my self because her parents were not married when she was born, a did a check and found she was listed in her mothers maiden name the quarter after she was born. She was re-registered when her parents married to give her dad's name. |
