Hot matches should include at least the county of birth if nothing more specific. I have several David Joneses in my family, so you can imagine how many 'matches' it comes up with. GR should also introduce a standardised method of entering birthplaces, so you don't end up with 14 different versions of the same place. As far as members' reactions to hot matches go, I haven't had any problem, apart from some people getting over-optimistic and contacting me on the grounds of having a David Jones or Thomas Hughes in common,

Could it be they haven't paid they're subscription and therefore can't reply unless they pay up!!?

In a moment of sheer boredom, I looked at my Hot Matches, more to work up a head of scorn and fury than anything else. Astonished, I found an EXACT match - very uncommon name, right date, three correct siblings - sent off an excited message - no reply. The person is an active member because I see occasional postings on threads. I am baffled! Olde Crone

Maria, Unpaid members can still reply to messages, they just can't initiate contact.

I haven't had any problems, everyone has replied to my emails. I have even found my fourth cousin, once removed(she told me that) in Australia. We exchanged loads of valuable info. A brill hot match!

Hope today was a better day! In defence of other non contacting people I have been a member for yonks but seem to have spates of getting on Genes so it can be a while before I reply. Aalso my computer plays up something wicked - I've just had to reimport my ged file onto hard drive and for some reason every entry address has decided to drop the town and just give me the County. That's over 1500 individuals and a fair amount with 4 census locations each. I have finally gotten around to looking at my hot matches and found I have TWENTY SIX pages. I just don't have the time to search through every one. I have checked the ones with three or more matches but all those singles????? Can Genes not have a mimimum of three matches? I would think if we have a single name brick wall, we would be able to search for ourselves, yeah? Good huntng to one and all, Kristeen

If it wasn't for Hot match I wouldn't have found my brothers ex-wife and through her, my two newhews and my neice and their children. I was searching for brothers family - we'd been out of contact for like 20 odd years. She was searching for her fathers family. Her name was the only common link (she hadn't included her children and grandchildren in he tree). I have since had lots of phone calls, emails. As a newby, I didn't know to check every second weekend for new matches. I think there should be a learn link for all of us who are new so that we can come up to speed faster. Love reading the advice offered by all you long term masters :) You've been sooooooo helpful.

I felt the same - in fact I still get ones where they are enthusiastic for one mail exchange and then nothing once Ive given all my info. So rude. But then again, I have found one good connection and we have actually exchanged info.
