Does anyone know a place called Woodhall Walter, probably near Felsted in Essex. Google doesn't seem to have heard of it. I have a relative born there about 1816. |

Have you had a look on www.streetmap*co*uk? You can look for Felstead and then have a rummage around the surrounding area for similar looking/sounding places. nell |

Thank you very much for that, Fred, it looks like a single l at the end, or possibly a b at the end of the first bit, but I think you must be right, though quite a way from Felsted where an earlier census said she was born, according to my road map. I have been scouring the old map website around Felsted thinking that it must be a small hamlet, but it looks quite a big place. Thanks again, Roger |

Thanks Helen for the suggestion, but I think Fred has nailed it for me. I can't think that there would be two places so similar. Having said which, Sussex has Ifield and Isfield and a family with property in both places !! Roger |

Hi Roger - being an Essex girl myself this sounded familiar (albeit a v. long time ago) - try Woodham Ferrers which is in Essex - perhaps your original address was an incorrect transcription? good luck Linda (no white shoes!) |

What's the name you're looking for, I might be able to spot it on the 1841 census? |

Thanks very much Brian, I am trying to tidy up my info on my great grandmother by marriage, who is down as being born at Felsted in one census and Woodha? Walter in another. Her maiden name was Mary Ann Ellis, I am pretty sure, and her sister Eliza, unmarried, run a laundry in Felsted. Mary Ann and my great granduncle Joseph Hargrave were staying with Eliza and several other family members at Coblers Green, Felsted in 1871. I think her father may have been William Ellis, who was staying with them in Lambeth in 1861, a wheelwright aged 73, and born in Felsted, according to the census. She married Joseph in 1855 I think, but I haven't sent for the certificate to check. I can't find her in the 1851 census. If you can find anything about her mother and confirm William could be her father I would be very grateful. I am just off to bed now though, so please don't treat it as urgent. Many thanks to everyone else who replied, I'll check out your suggestions tomorrow. Good night now and thank you all again. Roger |

Woodham Walter is in Essex and the OS Grid reference is at TL808 069. Felstead is about 12 miles to the north west at OS Grid referenceTL676 203. Basically they are separated by A12 which by passes the county town of Chelmsfield and continues on toward Colchester HTH Brenda |
