Computer disaster...year 2006 affects past history!

Learn from my mistake......back up your computer files NOW! and regularly thereafter. I have just had the ultimate disaster, the hard drive in my system has just gone pop like a light bulb, files, pictures “et al” gone. The limited amounts of info I saved on discs is just that, limited. Fortunately I have printed a lot of files for those days I sit and re-read, but a lot of my on line copy and pastes went into the dark ages. For those who helped me over the past year expect a lot of grovelling repeat questions. Bob still in shock!

Bob If you had stuff on your hard drive that is of value ie years of research you could use a data recovery service, they can get all your data back but its does cost a few quid. Just a thought as well as backing up to cdr i also use an online storage service costs a couple of quid a month but as we all know cds can get scratched ect. Steve P

I have an engineer working on the drive at this moment..the next step would be a recovery expert but the quote is astronomical and without guarantee of success!

This is one of the main reasons I chose FTM2006 as I export all my tree to the internet and back it onto cd. I therefore have at least 2 back up copies if the hard drive goes. (God forbid)

Hi Bob Sorry to hear of your problem. I invested in a 200 gb external plug and play hard drive which backs up everything, programme and files 'just in case'. It can also be used to restart your computer in case of a crash. I also use a 2gb USB memory stick to keep a second copy of all my family history files and pictures. With this I can easily transport my files to any other computer that has a copy of my FH programme (i.e my work computer and lap top). Much easier than copying to discs. You can never back up enough. Hope you manage to recover everything. Gill

Thank you all on and off site that offered advice, help & even sympathy. I have taken this lesson like a big punch. Recovery of the files is not looking good. I have been in contact with my engineer today. Renewal of my genes membership is a definite for 03 Mar. Thanks all. Bob
