I have what looks like Bik Fila Labourer for an ancestor in 1871. Has anyoune any ideas what this is or might be? There are several on that and the next page. His name is Samuel Webb born 1867 in Botwell, Middlesex. The job is his fathers. Any suggestions would be helpful! Lyndsay |

It's brick field labourer. If you go up the page the foreman has it written out in full. Janice |

He was born in Hayes!! It says Brickfield Labourer (abreviated). There are loads of them in the area. A brickfield is just a place where bricks are made and sold. Merry |

Looking at what's for some of those above him, it appears you have a Buckfield Foreman and several Buckfield Labourers (of which Samuel is one). Joy |

Merry - On other census returns it says Botwell, I've also seen Botwell-Hayes so I'm waiting for his birth cert to see what it says. I' waas under the impression the areas were next to each other or close by Looks like he's been demoted as in 1861 he was a brick maker! |

I would have thought that was a promotion! The labourers would be just digging clay or something and wheelbarrowing, the maker would have been a bit more skilled! Way to go. |

In 1862 it said brick maker on his marriage cert. 1871 census it is brick field labourer However i have found 1861 census just now and he is a labourer along with his brothers Definately a case of sounding good on the certificate I think!! Lyndsay |
