When was he born? Have you got him on a census? Did he marry, and if so, when did his wife die? Was she described as wife or widow on her death cert? Is he on any of his children's marriage certs as 'deceased', in which case he died before that date. nell

Nell His name was William Coward and he was born in Christchurch. I have him on the 1951,1961,1981 &1901 cencuses. In the 1901 cencus he was still living in Christchurch. He was born 6/11/1843. He married his Wife Sarah (Chudley) in 1883., but not sure when she died either. They had 8 children i think the last being born in 1901. My grandfather was married in 1921 and his father was listed as dec. Jayne

So a time frame of 1901-1920? Go to familyrelatives.org site. Register for free, click on the purchase units, put the code LC2005 in the promo box that comes up (no need for password), click then click on ten units. They are your free gift. Then search that period for your chap - it will bring up all matches. Its very easy, just enter, the event, and his name - ONLY PUT ONE FIRST NAME. You can refine it with the area.

then you have to search between 1901 and 1921. Won't take you that long! Ian

You could try wading through the 1837 Deaths. This is what I`m doing at present, trying to find the deaths of several people. I believe the Ancestry .co.uk BMDs are free at present, so have a go and see what you can dig up. Its very easy to use, just check in each quarter for the name you are looking for, then when you find it, check if the age and area are correct for the person you want. or Try the free BMD their deaths can go up to after 1910 although its not all completed yet, there are many thousands on it.

Hi I checked on freebmd and no likely suspects - they tend to stop around 1910. Have looked on ancestry for you from 1911 to 1920 and these are all the 'Coward' deaths I found registered in Christchurch. William I., 19, Dec Q 1919 2b 824 Charles, 0, Sep Q 1916 2b 736 Louisa M, 44, Jun Q 1916 2b 885 Sarah, 77, Mar Q 1916 2b 948 William R, 17, Mar Q 1916 2b 955 Samuel, 74, Sep Q 1914 2b 722 William, 67, Mar Q 1913 2b 910 ** John, 66, Jun Q 1912 2b 766 Frank, 14, Mar Q 1911 2b 508 ** Most likely for the William you're looking for but it would make his dob about 3 years out on your info. above. Best wishes Bridie
