I have been looking for a birth certificate for Henry S. Hullock born 1860 or 1861. Parents John Hullock and Ann Postlethwaite. I sent off for a certificate, but seems i was looking in the wrong place. I was going by three censuses. saying he was born in Ulverstone.but the registrar says he wasnt born there. nor in the Barrow area. can someone please help? Kate in Scotland |

I've had a look Jan quarter 1860 to Jan quarter 1862 inclusive but found no Henry Hullock. Only a few others several in Preston. Checked 1859 too If you come up with another likely date let me know Karen |

Henry is in 1861 census transcribed as Hallock. his age is given as 3 months which would have him born February 1861. I too can't see him at all on teh BMD but I wonder as he was the first child if he was born before his parents married? Kate - do you know the maiden name of his mother yet? Or is that what you're hoping to achieve wit the birth cecrtificate? Zoe |

Thank you Valerie Thank you Karen Zoe, His mothers maiden Name was Postlethwaite. Ive found him as you say under the name of Hallock on 1861 census, says he was born in Ulverston. on the 1871 and 1881 he is Henry Hullock, the correct spelling. again born in Ulverston. I have his parents marriage certificate. married in Ulverston. in1855 Kate |

Maybe he wasn't registered? There was no legal obligation until 1875. However, I see his sister Agnes J Hullock was........ Merry |

His sister Agnes J Hullock's entry is there in 1866 Apr/May/Jun quarter (ref 8e 658 in case you want it) - so strange that Henry isn't. Perhaps he was named something different and called Henry? Might be worth picking out any ulverstone ones. Karen |

this one is worth considering: Name: POSTLETHWAITE, William Thomas Henry Record Type: Births Quarter: June Year: 1861 District: Ulverston County: Cumbria Lancashire Volume: 8e Page: 664 there is no corresponding Postlethwaite child that I can see on the 1861 census |

Hi Merry, I thought it was the law that every birth had to be registered after 1855 or is that just in Scotland? Kate |
