Does anybody know when the Kaiser visited the Isle of Wight? I believe it was in the mid to late 1800's. Thanks Sue.

Wilhelm II had long had a fascination with the sea. 'It sprang,' he wrote, 'of no small extent from my English blood.' As a child, his first and most pleasant childhood memories had been those of playing at his grandmother's seaside resort on the Isle of Wight. Kaiser Wilhelm was born in 1859, so presumably it would have been in the 1860's Ian

Rachel----It would seem that you have to be a member of the library to access this site. But thanks anyway. Thanks to the rest of you for your info. I'm trying to find if my gggrandfather really was bodyguard to the Kaiser or if it is a family myth. I seem to be going round in circles between the Hampshire RO and the Isle of Wight RO and getting nowhere. Any of you geniuses out there got any ideas? Thanks Sue.

My Uncle told me last week that my gg/grandad Walter Lock was a great friend of the Kaiser didnt think it possible but now maybe it could have been true, and that he'd visited germany to see him.

If your ggdad was a bodyguard, then he would have been either military or metropolitan police, depending on the dates you are talking about. Either way, it will be in his service record. If he was an unnoficial BG, he would have been an estate worker at Osborne House I would imagine. Possibly the gamekeeper or someone skilled at arms. I have lots of info on BG's if you want to PM me I may be able to give you some pointers. Ian
