I'm trying to find a site i visited recently that has references to the three counties from around 1900 to ww2. It has several editions of Kellys and Whites directories as well as Leicester air raid shelter locations etc. I'm trying to find the name of the company who had a foundry on Monks Road in Lincoln around the time of ww2,and the name of the foundry they worked from. My g/father is rumuored to have been killed at the foundry in 1943,but until i can get to Lincoln and check anything that may be in the papers (i'm in Scotland) i'm pretty much stuck. Thanks Glen

Glen, My husband comes from Gainsborough and knows Lincoln quite well. He has just looked up foudries in Lincoln and has come up with 2 possible names. Clayton and Shuttleworth and Robey and son. In 1842 an iron foundry was set up near to the River Witham by Clayton and Shuttleworth which became The Titanic Works in 1912. He remembers standing at Canwick looking towards Lincoln Cathedral and at the left hand side, hiding Monk's Road from view was a sign for Robey and Son next to a large brick factory ( may be a foundry). Hope this helps in some way. Louise

Hi Louise, I too used to live in Gainsborough and worked in Lincoln for many years,as ever i never needed to know the information then. I remember accessing the site mentioned above and finding a name of a company who had a foundry and showroom on two sites on Monks Road,i just can't access the site at the moment. I do know of the Wellington Foundry in Lincoln and the link to the tanks being built there for ww1. Will have to try the site again later, thanks again If anyone can access the 1913 Kellys i think the company is called William Rainsforth and Sons, that's the bit i'm actually trying to confirm then workforwards from there. In 1924 grandad William was a blacksmith engineer (foreman),rumoured to have been killed aged 58 in 1943 whilst at work at the foundry. I'm just struggling to get near to the info at present. Glen

Glen, I've been looking at another site where a foundry also had a showroom om Monks Road. The foundry was called Duckingtons. Maybe that's the one. Louise
