There was a recent thread which gave the years between which the law prohibited a father's name being put on the birth cert of a child born out of wedlock - even if he wanted to be recorded as father and accompanied the child for the registration. I have a feeling 1874 falls into that time-span. Christine

i think there is a connection do you no if there is any other reason why the name would be crossed out

There could be a connection especially as Joseph has the surname of his mother's husband as his middle name. Does the names Laverick come up in any of the other children or indeed in his mother's line? My family used other family surnames as middle names and especially if born out of wedlock, e.g. Mary Ann Bartram Lines, her mother was Charlotte Lines and she married a James Bartram after Mary Ann was born. Kind regards Sue

Since Joseph was only about 6 when his mother married Mr. Laverick, and the son's name was Joseph, maybe he just assumed that Mr. Laverick was his dad, and gave this information to the vicar or registrar, and he was then told this wasn't correct, so the name was crossed out. Kath. x

It doesn't happen to be the same name as the bride's father does it?, in case it was just put in the wrong place and then crossed out. Kath. x

I've had something similar to this with one of my Gt. Gt. Grandmas. She was born in 1874 and father's name on her birth certificate is blank - ditto for her baptism record and her marriage certificate in 1899. Her mother never married, yet somehow had seven children, all all were baptized with a blank space for the father. However, when one of the other children married, the space of his wedding certificate named his father as 'Edmund' - a complete work of fiction. Obviously, he didn't like to see a blank space in the register and invented 'Edmund' out of thin air (it's not even a name that appears anywhere else in the family line!). This information was only as good as the person who actually provided it to the vicar. You'd have thought they might have been a bit more of a god-fearing bunch back then and wouldn't lie, especially to the church (for fear of being hit by lightning or something), but there are many instances of occupations being 'sexed up', parents being wrongly described as 'deceased', ages altered upwards or downwards and the place of residence at the time of marriage being especially unreliable. Don't believe a word of it!
