Can you help finding my Grandfather

I know my grandfathers name was Ernest Thompson and he married my grandmother Eileen Bloy around 1940. My father was born in Hunstanton where Ernest was based during the war. On my father's birth certificate it gives his father's army number but I don't know if I can use that. That's all I know about him. I don't know where he was born, his age at marriage or anything else. Could anyone advise on a good place to start? I've spoken to the army records people in Glasgow and they say they can't help me unless I can prove I'm his next of kin. Thanks Jayne

can you hunt down his marriage to Eileen Bloy- that cert will tell his fathers name, which will help a bit

Hi Jane, If you provide your birth and any marriage certificate, your father's birth and marriage certificate this should provide all the evidence they need to prove your identity. I am after my Polish fathers records and l have been told all I need is my birth and marriage certificate. Admittedly, I need my father's birth date but I should think you would have enough evidence to obtain the info you need. Have you tried the British Legion? oogle British Army WW11 and you should get some contacts there to help you. Is your father still alive? It might be easier if he applied for the info in his name.

Hi, yes my father's still alive and he's happy to do this but they also said I needed his father's date of birth which I don't have. I don't know if they got married in Sheffield where I think they were both from but would the local registrars office hold a copy of their marriage certificate? That would give me his ago but not his date of birth wouldn't it? Jayne

Is your grandfather still alive? If not, his death record may have his date of birth on. Sam x

you can hunt the index for the marrige and send for the cert - Eileen Bloy is a nice unusual name, quite a lot of quaters but not a dificult task

No my grandfather is dead. My father lost contact with all of his family 30 something years ago and his parents were separated then, I know they divorced as his mother married again. I think I will have to take a trip to the records office and see if I can find the marriage certificate. I'll send my birth certificate and dad's info off to the Army records office and see if that's enough to have his records released to us. Fingers crossed!! Thanks for all your help Jayne x
