Joseph Liebig's Meat Extract was the original product of the Fray Bentos factory in Uruguay in 1865. They switched to corned beef later Agent and commercial traveller were probably the same job -- as Linda says, a rep. Visited shops in a territory regularly to take the orders, promote new lines and bad-mouth the competition. Shops got most of their stock through agents because there were no cash-and-carry warehouses then |

Cheers everyone! Will investigate further! This gentleman has been an agricultural labourer, letter carrier, meat/malt extract agent and a commercial traveller!! Obviously took work where he could get it! Best wishes Helen |

It might mean that he was a rep for Bovril - it's certainly been around since late Victorian times. There's a BBC page with some history here: www.bbc.*co.uk/stoke/content/articles/2005/08/02/bovril_history_feature.shtml (remove the *) Looks like production was originally in London - would that tie in with the person you are investigating? Linda :o) |

Couldn't be MALT extract could it? To do with brewing beer? Having said that, it quite possibly is a meat extract agent - beef extract is a well known thing. I think. (!) http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/gen99/gen99982.htm Ian |

Hi there I have an occupation listed as a Meat Extract Agent and was wondering if it was another term for a butcher!! I have tried looking this up for definition but to no avail. Can anyone shed any light on this for me please!! Best wishes Helen |
