I have discovered that my gg grandad Charles NEWEY was prosecuted in 1838 in Northampton for stealing fowls (this is a snippit from a local newspaper). He was sentenced to 7 years transportation and sent to the Leviathan Hulk prison ship in Portsmouth. In 1841 he is on the census in Portsmouth still aboard Leviathan Hulk. I googled and found an article that stated he had been recommended for Royal Mercy. It also said he had been very useful as a ships tailor for 3 years. He obviously didnt get transported after all as he married in Exton, Rutland in 1846. I need to find the original documents about his conviction and possible pardon. I cannot get to The National Archives myself and wondered if anyone knew of a good and reliable researcher. I have used one before but have lost her contact details. Margaret

Sorry, can't recommend anyone, but I would have thought it would be an idea to ask if anyone on these boards could do the look-up for you, before paying out the sort of money professional researchers charge. I have had someone from these boards do look-ups for me at the LMA, as I live in the north, and I've helped him when I can, so I think it's always worth asking. Kath. x

Kathleen I had thought of that but don't like to ask. Think I will see what sort of answers I get and then may rephrase my posting. Margaret

Don't be shy about asking Margaret. People won't offer if they don't want to do it for you, so you've nothing to loose. If you don't get any offers of help, then you can think about paying a researcher, but this site is full of helpful people. Kath. x

A few years ago I heard a talk about the hulks and I seem to remember that you might be lucky to work out the whole story. TNA's website has plenty of records for the Leviathan, but you probably need a manual finding aid to work out which ones you actually want to look at. I think it might prove the sort of look up that needs to be carried out by a specialist, who knows, without having to swot up on it, where to look for the records. Best wishes Brenda

Most family history mags have adverts at the back - i would contact several to compare rates, as I think they vary, before deciding. Jay
