Me too, Ive got one in my line. The only thing I picked up recently was the info that they were often watermen or lightermen before they moved on to this job watching other watermen and lightermen!!

I will do Sue. I know that the Archives hold a book/s which give information on Excisemen but since i live so far away i doubt i'll get down to view it anytime soon. Mhairi

Thanks for looking I thought it looked like an M but wasnt sure what the small letter could be, personally i was hoping i was wrong and it said John. Far fetched i know but i found some possible christianings for known siblings with the parents John and Harriet. And in the 1841 census Henry is living with his siblings and a Harriet Stoker plus a George Stoker. My thinking was that she remarried but if the name begins with M then that idea might be out. Its a shame the NA havent got the exciseman books online, even just the names so that i could find him. Thanks for looking Mhairi

Well to me it just looks like an M with another small raised letter next to it. Obviously he had some form of shorthand, for example a Michael may have been written as M with a small raised L Occupation ? excise man Can´t help otherwise - perhaps someone else might look at it.

Recentely i got the marriage cert of one of my ancestors and i cant read the name in the fathers box. Its been shortened to fit in and while i can make out that her father is called Charles and i dont have a clue what his fathers called. Would anyone be willing to look at it for me? I have it scanned and all i would need is an email address. If anyone could help i'd be so grateful! Mhairi
