Just received the copy-page for the marriage register of great-grandparents' wedding. (Yippee!) The archivist had given me advance info from the page, in which she described/transcribed the groom's father's occupation as a 'cashier'. Looking at the copy of the page, I can see exactly why she wrote that, but the census images show: 1851HO107-2078: age 46, Leicester carrier; Mkt Harboro' Rd, North Kilworth, Leics 1861RG9-2245: age 56, Leicester Carrier; 6 Welford Rd, North Kilworth, Leics 1871RG10-3222: age 64, carrier; 2 Harboro' Rd, North Kilworth, Leics The ''rr'' in ''carrier'' in the marriage register entry looks very much as you'd expect to see the ''sh'' in ''cashier''. So if you're having trouble tracing a name/occupation/place somewhere and it has ''rr'' or ''sh'' in the middle, make sure you have a good look at the image to make sure you've picked up the correct interpretation. After all, this error was made by someone who's working with old script a lot, I should imagine. Good hunting! Christine |
