If he was a mariner perhaps he and the whole family were out of the country. |

Could this be the wife visiting? Any connection to the Harcout family? Do you have their marriage cert? Was your Charles always a mariner? On the census next to Harriet it looks like 'soldiers wife' - you have a look? The head - Fred Harcout or Harcourt is retired ironmonger. Harrett Gladwell abt 1846 Gesbeck, Suffolk, England Servant Ipswich St Nicholas Suffolk Catherine Harcout abt 1833 Ipswich, Suffolk, England Daughter Ipswich St Nicholas Suffolk Ellen Harcout abt 1828 Ipswich, Suffolk, England Daughter Ipswich St Nicholas Suffolk Fredrick Harcout abt 1794 Ipswich, Suffolk, England Head Ipswich St Nicholas Suffolk Mary Ann Harcout abt 1801 Ipswich, Suffolk, England Wife Ipswich St Nicholas Suffolk Rose Harcout abt 1831 Ipswich, Suffolk, England Daughter Ipswich St Nicholas Suffolk Ann Race abt 1843 Little Stonham Servant Ipswich St Nicholas Suffolk Harriet Smith abt 1827 Ipswich, Suffolk, England Visitor Ipswich St Nicholas Suffolk If it is her, maybe the daughter was left with someone who didnt know whether to add her to the temporary address so she got left off? |

ok...now I AM puzzled! I think I may have found augusta smith on the 1861. Her mother Harriet had a sister called emily, who married Obadiah norman. I have found emily and obadiah living in essex with a neice the same age as augusta but she is down as agatha!!! could this be her but mis transcribed I wonder? and if it is why is she in essex and not with her parents. I have found her on the 1871 in ipswich as a servant and she is down as augusta L smith....this hobbie is enough to drive you bonkers...:) |

Yes, if only they had led conventional lives, spelt their names right and not moved in their lifetimes eh. Sounds pretty convincing - strange name augusta, easily mistranscribed back at the office at that time. May be mum died? Would dad be a soldier? Not with Emily in 1851 I suppose? I found a marriage 17 years after the first kiddie was born - yet all the certs had given the mother as surname formerly Smith (truly). So dont go by the certs! |
