Found my gt grandfather born 1828 and on another site what could be his parents except the dates seem to be too early (born 1765). I guess the only way is to send for gt grandfather's birth certificate but - did they do them in 1828? If not can anyone advise me of an alternative please? Preferably while I'm still sane !! Jill

No certs available before 1837 I am afraid - Which site did you find him on? Dea

before 1st July 1837 we are reliant on baptism registers. Where did you get the reference to this chap's birth? Although men can father children well into old age, a woman born 1765 would be too old by 1828 (she'd be 63!)

Jill If you put 'before 1837' in the search box on this board where it say... enter text, you will bring up 27 posts on the Tips board and 15 on the Records board which refer to this subject. The search enables you to look up all sorts of help given on here since the site began. Happy hunting Kat :)

Hi Dea Found him on 1881 census and (what could be?) his parents on family search(*) org. And yes Helen - that's what I thought too. From family info I'm sure the gt grandfather is correct and I have found his wife too. The reason I thought there may be a connection with the generation adrift is that the names were also given to me by my father and seem to fit. He was certainly right about the gt grandfather and wife.

Jill Have you been back through all the censuses ? You only mention 1881. You should be able to find your great great grandparents on one of the earlier censuses with your great grandfather. That will give you more idea of their ages and their birthplaces. Kat

FWIW I have a relly born 1830 with her father baptised in 1775. He married at least twice. Was over 90 when he died. Best way to check if a generation is 'missing' would be to look at the age at death.
