Here's a thought... You have not traced any siblings yet, but IF he was the first-born child, then it was common for a woman to go home to her mother to have the first baby. If he wasn't the first born, then he still could have been born somewhere other than where you expect him to be - lots of reasons, the family moved temporarily (and then back again), mother was on a visit and the baby came early.... You need to eliminiate this one by looking at the Parish Register as the IGI is only ever a clue. Olde Crone

Jay I have looked at the BT's and he's not there but saw PR pn film--there's a thought when I go back to Records office will do that. No I haven't looked for any sibling's yet and the birth I found was Bolton on Bowland and I thought it would be Marske. Thanks' for giving me another avenue to try. It's so annoying

Ann, Have you looked at the actual original PR, or on film? Is it possible that there is a gap in the bp register - although the catalogue ref for either original or film usually says if there is a gap. You could try BTs for the parishes you have looked at.(sometimes they do vary from PR ) Have you found other children for the parents? if so, were they where you expected them to be? Isn't it maddening - if one is missing from the register, it's usually the one you want. Where did you expect it to be and where is the one you've found? Jay

I don't suppose it says he was born in Northumberland but you were expecting Norfolk, does it? Because there are some baptisms on there that say (I think it is) Earsdon, by North Shields, Northumberland which actually took place at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. They have started putting them up as Great Yarmouth as well, but refuse to delete the incorrect ones. Oh, sorry, just realised you were talking about fiche! I'm talking about FamilySearch online! Kate.

Thanks But have looked on Parish register's in the area that the family have been in for 200 year's prior to c1772 . Can you tell me if the IGI on fiche is more complete than online,I know this sound's like how long is a piece of string!!

Ann, The big thing to remember about IGI is that it is NOT complete by any means. So because it gives just one bp for a Mary Bloggs, born in Yorkshire, it does not neccessarily follow that that was the only Yorkshire bp to have taken place for a Mary Bloggs. Are there any other IGI events that fit with the bp you've found, to help confirm or eliminate it as a possibility? Jay

you could have a look in familyhistoryonline and see if it matches. Ian

How accurate is anything? I have found errors in original parish registers, bmd certificates, census returns, electoral rolls, street directories and virtually every other record I've looked at. If you want to know if the extract on the IGI is right, you would need to consult the original entry in the parish register, which will be in the relevant county records office. If you want to know if the original entry is right, or that this person is indeed YOUR relative, then I don't know the answer! nell

I am looking for a rellie's birth around 1762,can't find it in the area on the parish record's but found one on Fiche on IGI that fit's the year, but it is at the other side of the country to where he married. I realise that before Computer's and the fashion for doing Family History people had to rely on IGI etc, just wanted your thought's on this. I do like to be correct in my information.
