It says in the explanation of the site that only names appearing in the census at least 100 times are included. Perhaps you put in a rare name?

I entered a surname that I know exists but it returned no results

Im wondering just how accurate it is though. I fed in my Horstead lot (absolutely totally confined to either Norfolk or Northampton) and there was a bunch of colour up in Yorkshire. Well, I thought, thats a new lead. So I go to the 1881 to check out all these Yorkshire Horsteads - 2 of them. yep just two. I am wondering whether the soundex numbers are used rather than exact.

Rachel, I pasted and copied, so guess it must be right. You are replacing the asterisks with full stops are you? I just typed it in to address bar and it is working ok for me. (GR wont allow website addies so we have to confuse them by replacing full stops)

Just for a bit of fun and interest, this website will show you the distribution of your surname for the 1881 census and then again for the 1998: http://www*spatial-literacy*org/UCLnames/Surnames*aspx
