Thanks to everyone you replied. Kerry I have found a Parker family on the 1861, have a look at your message. You can search using occupation, relationship to head and marital status etc.. on the 1901 using the Advanced options, this is a quicker way to narrow down your searches. Annette

Should have qualified it a bit - great for the 1881 census but you're right, it is usually the relationship that it picks up on. If I'm doing a trawl, I will put the surname and whatever as a keyword, then narrow it down by a process of elimination. I'm too lazy to go to the next stage before adding it :-) Ian

Really Ian and does it pick that up or just ignore it as it seems to with me?? I mean does it actually cut down the options. I always put that sort of thing in the relationship box.

You can use occupation as a search parameter on the 1901 census if you use the advanced search on the 1901 census site. For those who use Ancestry, it is possible to get enough info from the pro site (for free) to locate the person in the 1901 on Ancestry. Always remember to be creative when selecting the search word. A miner could be coal miner, collier, etc Pete

The keywords work for anything, heather. I often search using lodger, boarder, pupil, inmate, etc. Ian

Only, I think, on the 1881 census, where you could include the occupation as a keyword. Of course, you would need to know exactly how it was described. One mans shipwright is another mans labourer! Ian

Dont think so, Ive never tried it but only the 1881 shows occupation. You can add key words but they refer to the area.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to search ancestry by occupation when checking the census records? On 1901 Online you can include the occupation as one of the search options, can you do the same on Ancestry? I am looking for a Roberts and Jones in Wales so this would be very useful! Annette
