How can I find a birth?

I am trying to find the birth of John Cross Greet, according to the 1901 census he was age 3, and born in Cardiff. His parents were William John and Maud Mary Greet. I have looked on the Family Relatives, Free BMD and 1837 web sites, but found nothing. Please could anyone suggest where else I might try? Kind regards, Linda.

Is it a bird? is it a plane?

As the 1837 site is the complete index for England and Wales I don't think there is anywhere else we can suggest. All I can think of to say is make sure you search a year or so either side of the year you expect him to be born, and note down *any* John Greet's, perhaps he was registered as John Greet and the Cross was added later?

Have you looked under Cross and Greet? If you've looked on 1837, which is complete, you won't find anything on Freebmd, which is incomplete but from the same index anyway. It's possible he was registered in a different name or in a different reg district from the one you expected. You could try contacting the relevant register office in Cardiff and asking if they could find it. Be glad it isn't the usual Welsh surname of Evans/Jones! nell

Ancestry have transcribed his middle name as Croft, so maybe you know whether it is actually Cross or Croft. I can't find a birth for him at the right time on 1837online. It might be worth getting in touch with the register office in Cardiff in case his birth was missed off the entries sent to the GRO. To be 3 years old on the 1901 census his birth should have been registered between the June qtr. of 1897 and June qtr. of 1898. The only Greet birth that I can find in Cardiff in that time is this one:- William George Greet, Dec. qtr. 1897, Cardiff, 11a, 235 Kath. x

On Ancestry, he's transcribed as: John Croft Greet And it does look like CROFT. It would only be CROSS in a much earlier census - 1851/61 say, when people were still using old-style Ss. Christine

Name: Croft, John Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1897 District: Cardiff (1837-1974) County: Glamorgan Monmouthshire Volume: 11a Page: 392 The Index used for transcription is typed, so there isn't much doubt about the record - unless it was already wrong at that stage. Christine

this looks like Wm Jno: Name: Greet, William John Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1870 District: Stoke Damerel County: Devon Volume: 5b Page: 310 In 1881 he was with his family (father, a RN stoker, was away) at 11 Fort St, Devonport (next door to my husband's G-mother, her father and maternal grandmother!) at No 12! In 1871 he was with his mother at 15 St John St, Devonport (father away then, too). He was 4 m old. cheers Christine

Wonder of Maud Mary was claiming to be ''of full age'' when she married?! Name: Jerrett, Maud Mary Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1878 District: Crediton County: Devon Volume: 5b Page: 410 Or maybe they were a bit late registering her? Christine

Just a thought. If all else proves fruitless, could he actually be John Croft. and not their natural son at all? Maybe his mum died in childbirth. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Name: Croft, Mary Ann Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 45 Quarter: December Year: 1897 District: Cardiff (1837-1974) County: Glamorgan Monmouthshire Volume: 11a Page: 192
