General advice - make sure it's a JPEG rather than a Bitmap image, and the smaller the size the better - there is a size limit I think on uploads, but I'm not sure what it is. Other than that, not a clue!

The uploading process hasn't worked for me for several months now. I had about 4/5 of my photos added, and it stopped working from one day to the next. I've tried again periodically. I'm not sure if the breakdown coincided with the roll-out of the new version of the tree viewer, though I think it might have done. I don't use it, since it doesn't work for Macs. I've contacted GR, and they said they'd look into it. Update a few seconds later: Well, I tell a lie. The new tree viewer now does seem to work. Can't say I like it much, though.

My question is: Why would you want to? Keep your photos on your own PC on your genealogy program. If you haven't got one then why not? There are free versions available and others that you have to pay for. They are much more user friendly than the tree system on GR. Anyone who just has their tree on GR is asking for problems. What if the site decided to close or delete everyones tree or had a serious virus or something? You would lose everything. Please back up your tree on your PC and on CD or floppy disc. Margaret

Margaret: I uploaded photos (all safely burned to CDs stored in the UK and in New Zealand!) to GR to have a quick and easy way of showing them to anyone to whom I gave tree access, who could then request high resolution versions by email, if they didn't already have them. But photo display doesn't seem to work except in the old tree viewer edit mode, so I'm not sure that they can be seen in a shared tree at the moment anyway. I'm a bit obsessed with tracking down photographs of those people in my tree for whom it is theoretically possible. One of my earliest GR contacts was able to send me copies of photos of my father's grandmother and her daughters which hadn't been passed down in my family at all. It's funny sometimes who ends up keeping them.

Peter But if you make contact with a genuine relative then you can email them a pic off your own computer that you have scanned into it. That is what I do. Margaret

Sure, that's what I do too (emailing copies directly). I still think there are some advantages to having them attached to the GR tree too - a viewer can quickly see which people I have photos of and which photos they are without my having to provide a list or send the whole lot. But as I say, so far it has been a theoretical issue - none of my hundreds of Knight 2nd and 3rd and 4th cousins who would find that most useful seem to be a GR user.
