Does anyone know what these schools were? some of my relations went to Blue Coats hospital school, they seemed to have been orphaned, although mother remarried. Would they have been fee paying places, or a type of charity? Val

My partner went to a Hospital school in Ireland and I just asked him about it. He said that it used to be a Hospital before becoming a school..thats all! Gerri.

It would appear they were set up to take orphaned children and educate them, from info about the one in Liverpool and others set up in Ireland.

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 7 Jan 2006 22:53

For the purposes of Blue Coats Schools, an Orphan was defined as someone whose FATHER had died, i.e. the Bread Winner, not necessarily both parents. My own father subscribed a few pence a week to the Blue Coats School Charity in case he snuffed it and my mother couldnt afford to keep us. It was a very popular scheme amongst the lower ranks of white collar workers! Olde Crone

Old Swinford Hospital School is mentioned here:- http://www.m-a.org.uk/education/primary/primary_mathematics_challenge/finalists.htm so it must still exist. Kath. x
