David - I wondered if this could be an older brother even (doesn't explain who John Henry Harris Gator is staying with admittedly, but.....) But being as it is in Willsden.... mother is a widow..... Ancestry is currently 'orf luv' - and this site very dodgey from where I am sitting in Australia. Perhaps later everything will become more stable. Victoria

frank could be a cousin and even the francis on the wedding cert, but not possible for the father. I have also come across this info before but still cant link anything in without john henry gater info. Are there baptism records at Kew or will i need to go to the actual church or local record office for islington (john henry harris was registered).

Sorry David - I went off half cocked in my excitement of thinking I had found him. Ancestry is playing up and wouldn't let me copy the page and now won't bring it back up for me either. However - 1901 census Name: Frank Gater Age: 16 Estimated birth year: abt 1885 Relation: Son Household: View other family members Gender: Male Where born: Paddington, London, England Civil parish: Willesden Ecclesiatical parish: St John the Evangelist County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Source information: RG13/1222 Registration district: Hendon Sub-registration district: Willesden ED, institution, or vessel: 45 Folio: 16 Page: 23 (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 204 Oh - it just did!! Do you think this might be connected? I'll keep looking (as long as Ancestry co-operates) I am wondering if it is your cold weather or our very HOT weather upsetting it!! Frank Gater abt 1885 Paddington, London, England Son Willesden Middlesex View Record Mary Ann Gater abt 1861 Paddington, London, England Head Willesden Middlesex View Record Maud Gater abt 1887 Paddington, London, England Daughter Willesden Middlesex Victoria

hi netty i thought it might be but how do i find out? If i ordered the birth cert it wouldnt have the fathers name on it if he was illegitimate. Also when i looked at an acutal copy of that reg it had an asterisk by this entry, any clue what that might mean? Marie

thanks Victoria but i have this information but i dont believe it is my gt grandfather. The john henry you've found died in 1929 of TB mine lived until the 1970's. Although, i have started to fantasise about him faking his death and starting a new life lol. Also the wedding cert said his father was called frank and the one you've found father is walter george. However, uncannily my gt grandfather named one of his sons walter george! His other son has harris in his name and im wondering if my gt grandfather was illegitimate and is really a harris! Thank you for your time Marie Prior (nee Gater)

Hi all. I posted a message on here quite a while ago concerning a missing gt grandfather, john henry gater. I have a wedding cert, death cert and have found records from Kew to say he joined london fusilers in 1915. His birth date alledgedy is august 1893, however there is no birth cert to confirm this. The wedding cert named his father as Frank Gater deceased and there is a francis gater as a witness. He isnt on the 1901 census. Ive tried checking military records (destroyed in the blitz), tried looking at occupation (he was a silversmith at one point), tried looking at london websites (he lived in willesden north london), tried lots of geneology sites! Any advice on what else i can do will be much appreciated.
