Well they'd be on the census. I don't know what other records existed, after all education wasn't made compulsory until the 1870s. The National Union of Teachers might have archives about their members, ditto local education authorities. Private schools might have their own. nell

My thinking was that teacher training colleges would have records, and all trained teachers get registered with the Ministry in London. Jim

Merry Report 29 Dec 2005 19:43

I would have thought the first steps would be: 1) To see if the school still exists and ask them about records 2) If school no longer exists, try the local County Record Office 3) Look on Access to Archives (Google A2A) My g-grandfather was a teacher 1881-1920 at the same school. I got tons of info from the school in Somerset. His teacher training took place in County Waterford, Ireland........now, I never could have guessed that, given he was born and bred in Bristol!! School records are supposed to end up in the record's office but some never quite manage it.

My grandmother was teaching in 1901. She did a sort of apprenticeship at the local village school. She did her exams including French by correspondence course - very strange accent but she had her certificates. The school published a book recently to mark its 150 year cetenary and pride of place was a picture of my grannie with her class so you never know what you might find.

Steve, have you tried friends reunited?I found out the history of my daughters old school from here and someone had written a book about it which included old pictures from way back, the school was dismantled brick by brick and shipped to the USA to be rebuilt. The site also has former teachers on, who may be able to help you, if not just google it, you will be surprised!!! Good luck...MOE!
