thanks for the quick help. they are the ones i have got. Going by his wedding cert(if NOT a porkie) he was born aprox 1896 (his new wife was only 21). the 1st Ernest i found was in 1901 with father William, who is a coal miners hewer. Went a little back to 1881& found William with his father named JOHN & william has a brother called ERNEST.. When i went forward again to 1901 to trace this 2nd Erenst he is still living at home with mum & dad aged 23(means he would have been 45 when married) but he is a colliery Labourer. my 1st thought wa perhaps my 1st Ernest was later brought up by his Grandfather John but then started to even confuse myself.

Could this be a birth for the father William in 1901 above? DAVIES, John William Record Type: Births Quarter: March Year: 1868 District: Basford County: Derbyshire Nottinghamshire Volume: 7b Page: 91 Not sure where Basford is in relation to Keyworth - perhaps someone else can help on this Have to say that Heather´s suggestion looks more suitable - Ernest was a colliery labourer and father an urban council labourer (at aged 60 he had probably changed jobs from collier to something above ground!)

Well, this is the right named dad and area, but looks like if its your Ernest he was telling porkies about his age: 1901 View Record Ernest Davies abt 1878 Alfreton, Derbyshire, England Son Alfreton Derbyshire View Record John Davies abt 1841 Markfield, Leicestershire, England Head Alfreton Derbyshire View Record Mary Ellen Davies abt 1881 Alfreton, Derbyshire, England Daughter Alfreton Derbyshire

So he was born 1896? Where did you find the one you have scrapped - in the 1901 census? With father shown as coal miner, William?

HELP PLEASE.. I'm trying to find info on my great grandfather, Ernest Davies. my grandma is now 83 & last saw her dad at 5yrs old so knows very ltiile about him. I have his wedding cert which states he was 27 in 1923 with a father named John Davies who was a Collier under manager & Ernest was a Coal miner. When he married he wasnt living with his parents he was with the in-laws to be. I am not 100% of where he was from, my Gran seems to think Alfreton. I have found an Ernest the right age but with wrong fathers name(but he has a grandfather named John), The John mentioned prev also has a son neamed Ernest but 17yrs older than the age i was looking for. The only thing 100% was he was a miner when my Gran was born in 1923 & for a least 5yrs after around the Eckington, Derbyshire area, is there ANYWHERE I can go to find any info on him. PLEASE PLEASE HELP.
