Thank gawd, Jeanette, I was sure I had replied to the Silby/Selby one on the thread. I thought I was going mad, but Ive checked and I had gone through all this Selby/Silby stuff on there too following your kind find.! I am seriously getting worried about my memory at the moment. Im hoping its just a thing for ladies of a certain age but it has surprised me how often Im forgetting things or making mistakes. Perhaps new eyes and a new brain for christmas then. |

Oh thanks Geoff and everyone else - Shoemaker, eh. Jeanette, yes, I thought I replied to that one? Im very grateful except it does seem to put things out of joint for me. I had found the Silby family in Rotherhithe (before Stephens birth). I then found what I thought was the same family in Middlesex (including Stephen) even though they are transcribed as Selby in that one. HOWEVER, the fact that Stephen was still turning up as Selby in later censi has rather mucked up my hopes that these were my Silby family, as you can imagine one census getting it wrong, but several? And also his death ref is Selby. And on top of that I find ma and pa Silby still together without any kids in the 1871. Silby. Not Selby. Id have thought a change of name would involve mum and dad more than any of them. Its a conundrum because he has the right job (carpenter) as all the Silbys. It may turn out it is him at some stage but right now I cant put him down as a definite. Pain, as he is the only one born after 1837. I keep wondering whether to send off for a cert just to see but I wasted £14 last week on the rotten Allford family - a wrong cert and two wrong wills if anyone has an Edward Allford from Southwark. SO back to the drawing board on that Im afraid. Im hoping that when the 1841 comes out I will be able to see the older kids born Rotherhithe (including GGMx3) still with a Silby family which will tie in the right ones. Many thanks for your assistance. |
