I have been researching my grandmother's family. I knew her older brother George was killed in the first world war but little else about him. However following advice from another site I went on line to the commonwealth war graves commission and was able to print a certificate which gives details of his regiment the Somerset light infantry and even a picture of the cemetry Dozingheim in Belgium where he was buried. I also have another address for my great grandparents in 1917.

Hi Annie, that's great!! But are you telling us this because you're delighted to have found something out (as you should be!) or because you'd like to know where to look next?? Regards, William

Annie Would you kindly clarify us on the reason the intended perpose of your post please? I think it could be interperated in one of three ways. 1) That you are so overjoyed that you have found this 'uncle' that you wanted to share your joy, 2) that you just want to share the advice you were given, 3) you want some assistance in finding out some more information. If you do need help with locating extra info, please let us know what you are looking for. (I don't mean to be rude, bitter or annoyed or anything negative, only that i can see some pottential confusion arising) Lunar xXx

I thought I would add the war graves commission site as a tip for other members who may have lost relatives in a war. I was also pleased to find the photoes of the cemetry. Sorry if people were confused by my post.

Annie, I found my great grandfather on the War Graves site. It's exciting to find our relatives but sad too, isn't it? At least we know where they were laid to rest. Have you looked on the National Archives and tried to find his medal roll card? I found my great grandfather's and my father's cousin's also. Good hunting!! Susan

Annie, That's a good tip for newbies and well worth reminding us all of. I recently went back to have another look and discovered that whereas when I first printed off certificates for a couple of WW1 deaths they had a general picture of a poppy wreath, now like the later ones they have pictures of the actual cemetary, so CWGC evidently are still upgrading their site. In our little village church we have a lectern with a plaque commemorating 3 men who died in the great war and I have put their CWGC certificates, and the cemetary details which they also provide, into a file which now sits beside the lectern . Thanks Judith

If you Google CWGC it will give you the site. I found a brother which my Grandad never spoke about who was killed on the Somme on there.

I found my grandad's brother on the Commonwealth War Graves site. He was killed in 1915 aged 25, in Mesopotamia, which is now Iraq, and it makes today's troubles there all the more poignant. Kath. x

You can search by surname but for common names you need to be able to guess the regiment usually the local one. I was lucky that the inscription for my great uncle gave his parents name and address. I also knew the year of death. The site is very user friendly.
