Nell That is not a very happy choice, as you say. You would hope they didn't understand what the name actually meant. I am now on a mission to find out if it had been a name in the family further back. Rgds Maggie

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO REPLIED I am flabbergasted. All I have ever seen in all these months of searching for rellies is: Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Jane, William, George, Alfred, John, James...etc. (on both sides too). To think someone broke with tradition. I love it!! I would never have looked for it anywhere else, believing it had to be a mistake. Just goes to show you should never assume (making an ass out of u and me, as I have heard said) anything. THANKS SO MUCH. Maggie I hope someday to get good enough to be able to repay some of the great help I have had on this site!

Jabez is mentioned in the Bible in chronicles: 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 NIV) Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, 'I gave birth to him in pain.' {10} Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, 'Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.' And God granted his request. Jabez is sometimes translated as 'brought forth in sorrow'. My father's eldest brother was called Jabez (though I always called him Uncle Jim, lol!). I thought it was a very sad name to give your first child. nell

I am fairly confident that this is someone's attempt at JABEZ. This is a Biblical name that was very popular in the Victorian era. nell

Help please from anyone with really good eyesight!!! On the 1851 census at Bethnal Green, for the household of William Merritt,b.1811 Hampshire, his wife Sarah and children Sarah, William, James, Joseph, Mary and...it has been transcribed as JUBIZ. I cannot make out the name on the original image. The writing is very flourishy (?) Anyone out there who can suggest anything else? I have never heard the name Jubiz, and this family is not exactly imaginative in their choice of names as you can see. Many thanks. Maggie
