The only census Joseph really should be on is 1851, but huge swaths of Manchester are missing, according to Ancestry :O(( Merry |

Unless they changed the surname spelling it would seem likely they emigrated. What's the chances of Eliza (Large) and Joseph BOTH living to past 1920 (no deaths on Family Relatives) and not found on any census??? (sounds as if you have looked hard!). UPDATE: Having just read Smiley's message....I only checked Woulidge as I didn't notice the other spellings!! Merry |

Okay, I give in, though not give up, LOL I have come to the end of my own skills Could I ask for some help from one of you brilliant ladies or gentlemen who can bend it like Beckham, flying through all censuses at the speed of light, overcoming mistranscriptions and faint images at a single bound? I am looking for a Joseph Mason Woulidge . What I have: From 1841: HO 107/542/3 folio 22 pg 37 Police Station, Barton-upon-Irwell Elizabeth Woulidge; 35; [no entry for county but what could be F or Fr in the other countries bit] Mary Ann Woulidge; 15; [as above] Joseph Woulidge; 11; [as above I know from the local island archives that Joseph was born on St Helena circa 1827 I cannot find Joseph on any other census, ever. I have the parents Elizabeth and Benjamin, on duty on 1841, in all subsequent censuses, also sister Mary Ann, who married in 1851 and took the name Roscoe. No Joseph, though I combed the areas image by image. Both households moved to Cheshire, though the Roscoes are still in Manchester in 1851. No sign of Joseph The Woulidges move on to Leicestershire after 1861, Joseph is nowhere to be seen either with them or nearby, in any of the three counties. Is he dead? Not yet at least: From BMD and the certificate I obtained from the references Manchester December Quarter Vol.8d P. 616: Registration District: Manchester 1852 No. 100 Marriage solemnised at St Phillips church in the parish of St Phillips’ Manchester in the county of Lancaster When married: Dec 20th Name and surname:Joseph Mason Woulidge age 23 Eliza Large age 19 groom's Rank or profession: Joiner Residence at time of marriage : 16 Whitely or Whitby Street (for both) Fathers name and surname/ Rank and profession of father Benjamin Woulidge Tailor William Large Brickmaker Witnessed by George Dale – this is Eliza’s brother in law Sabina Hall – so far unidentified From what I can gather, the address is a boarding house, one of those addresses used to save having banns read in two parishes. Eliza Large was born in Delamere, Cheshire, the family lived at Tarvin in the same county. I have searched all around Eliza's family both in Manchester and Cheshire in 1851 and 1861: no sign of Joseph there, either alone in 1851 or with family in 1861 The only other thing I have is another BMD reference: Births:Sarah Mason Woulidge Sept Qtr 1855 8e 528 Lancaster according to the IGI, father is Joseph Mason Woulidge, mother is Eliza, and christening was 21 September 1855 Saint Mary Lancaster Aand yes, I have searched for them using Lancaster as residence. No luck. I have searched Ancestry in any way I can think, wild cards, searches for just a Joseph born in St Helena, I even searched leaving all boxes blank except the words British subject in the keyword box.. there were about 50,000 of them, not one of them him What happened to them after 1855? Were they abducted by aliens? I repeat, it is only this guy, his wife and child I am looking for. I have everyone else by the name of Woulidge in all censuses and all BMD references. Can any one of you super sleuths find out more??????. Hopefully Jane |
